American Research Insitute in Turkey 2013-2014

The American Research Institute in Turkey will offer ARIT Fellowships for research in Turkey for the academic year 2013-2014.  Grants for tenures up to one year will be considered; some preference, however, is given to projects of shorter duration.  ARIT operates hostel, research, and study facilities for researchers in Turkey at its branch centers in Istanbul and Ankara.

Eligibility Requirements:  Scholars and advanced graduate students engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern times in Turkey, in any field of humanities and social sciences, are eligible to apply.  Student applicants must have fulfilled all preliminary requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation by June 2013, and before beginning any ARIT-sponsored research.  Non-US applicants who currently reside in the US or Canada are expected to maintain an affiliation with an educational institution in the US or Canada.  Scholars who have completed their formal training also may apply for ARIT Fellowships sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (described in separate announcement).

The Center for African American Studies at Princeton University invites nominations or self-nominations for faculty members from research universities or liberal arts colleges, and from independent scholars for a Visiting Appointment for the 2013-2014 academic year. This visiting appointment was established to enable the Center to invite one scholar each year whose research and teaching explicitly examine issues of race in innovative interdisciplinary ways. Candidates in any field may apply. The Visitor may be appointed for one semester or for the entire academic year and will, with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty, teach one undergraduate lecture course, and will participate in faculty-graduate seminars and other activities of the Center for African American Studies. The Distinguished Visitor will receive a salary of up to one-half of his or her academic year salary (not to exceed a maximum salary set each fall) for the appointment period, which extends from September 1 to July 1; independent scholars with no sabbatical support will receive a salary not to exceed the maximum set each fall.

Postdoctoral Fellowships at The Center for African American Studies at Princeton University

The Center for African American Studies at Princeton University invites applications from pre-tenure scholars and recent Ph.D. graduates in all disciplines for two postdoctoral or more senior research positions. These positions will be awarded for the academic year 2013-2014 to emerging scholars who will devote their ten-month residency at Princeton to writing about race in the national or global contexts and, with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty, to teaching one semester-long undergraduate course.

Postdoctoral scholars will also participate with Center faculty members and affiliated graduate students in a seminar devoted to the discussion of work in progress. In addition, they will be invited to participate in other programs, including seminars, colloquia, and public lectures and will enjoy access to Firestone Library and to a wide range of activities throughout the University. Applicants should have received the doctorate within the past five years and cannot be in the process of writing a dissertation. The term for these positions extends from September 1, 2013 until July 1, 2014; a competitive salary will be provided.

CSU Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program

Through the Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP), the California State University (CSU) provides financial assistance in the form of a student loan to a limited number of individuals pursuing doctoral degrees. The program seeks to provide loans to doctoral students who are interested in applying and competing for CSU instructional faculty positions after completion of the doctoral degree.
  
Program Details

• Loans available in amounts of up to $10,000 per year up to a total of $30,000.
• Loans obtained through this program are repayable over a 15-year period, commencing one year after completion of or withdrawal from full time doctoral study.
• If a participant applies, competes for, and is hired in a CSU instructional faculty position after completion of the doctoral degree, 20 percent of the loan will be forgiven for each year of full-time postdoctoral teaching employment in the CSU.
• Part-time teaching in the CSU may also be considered for partial loan forgiveness, if the participant teaches at least half-time and has successfully completed the doctorate degree.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships

These fellowships, for 12 months of full-time dissertation research and writing, are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship might explore religious tolerance, human rights, spiritual beliefs in comparative perspective, justice, or racial and gender equity. The stipend is $25,000 for a 12-month period of full-time dissertation writing. The Newcombe Fellowships are administered with the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

International Dissertation Research Fellowship Program (IDRF)

The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) Program supports the next generation of scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences pursuing dissertation research that advances knowledge about non-US cultures and societies. The program is open to graduate students in those fields enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States, regardless of citizenship. The IDRF offers nine to twelve months of support; fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $20,000. Eighty fellowships are awarded annually.  The IDRF is committed to empirical and site-specific research that advances knowledge about non-U.S. cultures and societies (involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections, or quantitative data collection). The IDRF Program is administered by the Social Science Research Council in consultation with the American Council of Learned Societies and with funding provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
