Townsend Dissertation Fellowships

The Townsend Fellowships program supports the research of graduate students at UC Berkeley.  Fellows meet in weekly discussions together with tenured faculty, a Librarian Fellow, a Museum Fellow, and several Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows.  These discussions allow for interdisciplinary peer review of work in progress in an informal setting.

Eligibility: Townsend Dissertation Fellowships are awarded to graduate students writing PhD dissertations whose research projects significantly involve humanistic material or problems that have a significant bearing on humanities.  The competition is open to graduate students who are advanced to candidacy, or who will be advanced to candidacy by June 2012.

Award: $18,000 stipend.

Microsoft Research, Social Media Collective Postdoc Opening

The Social Media Collective at Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for a social media postdoctoral researcher (start date: 1 July, 2013). This position is an ideal opportunity for a scholar whose work draws on anthropology, communication, media studies, sociology, and/or science and technology studies to bring empirical and critical perspectives to complex socio-technical issues.

Postdoc researchers receive a competitive salary and benefits package, and are eligible for relocation expenses. Postdoc researchers are hired for a two-year term appointment following the academic calendar, starting in July 2013.

The Leonard Davis Institute Post-Doctoral Grants

The Leonard Davis Institute for International Relations offers up to two post-doctoral grants to Israeli and overseas applicants in the area of International Studies.
The elected candidate will be eligible to office space, full access to the Hebrew University's libraries, and the Institute's facilities. Fellowship recipients are required to spend at least nine months at the Leonard Davis Institute over the course of the academic year for which they receive the grant. During this period the post-doctoral fellows are expected to be actively involved in the Institute's academic and public activities, including the organization of lectures and symposia, and to submit an article for publication on their area of research.

Award: $20,000

The Smith Foundation World Politics and Statescraft Fellowship

The Smith Richardson Foundation is pleased to announce a new annual grant competition to support Ph.D. dissertation research on American foreign policy, international relations, international security, strategic studies, area studies, and diplomatic and military history.

The fellowship's objective is to support the research and writing of policy-relevant dissertations through funding of fieldwork, archival research, and language training.  In evaluating applications, the Foundation will accord preference to those projects that could directly inform U.S. policy debates and thinking, rather than dissertations that are principally focused on abstract theory or debates within a scholarly discipline.

The Foundation will award up to twenty grants of $7,500 each.

 The Foundation must receive all World Politics and Statecraft Fellowship proposals by 12:00 midnight, EST, October 17, 2012. 

American Research Insitute in Turkey 2013-2014

The American Research Institute in Turkey will offer ARIT Fellowships for research in Turkey for the academic year 2013-2014.  Grants for tenures up to one year will be considered; some preference, however, is given to projects of shorter duration.  ARIT operates hostel, research, and study facilities for researchers in Turkey at its branch centers in Istanbul and Ankara.

Eligibility Requirements:  Scholars and advanced graduate students engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern times in Turkey, in any field of humanities and social sciences, are eligible to apply.  Student applicants must have fulfilled all preliminary requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation by June 2013, and before beginning any ARIT-sponsored research.  Non-US applicants who currently reside in the US or Canada are expected to maintain an affiliation with an educational institution in the US or Canada.  Scholars who have completed their formal training also may apply for ARIT Fellowships sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (described in separate announcement).

The Center for African American Studies at Princeton University invites nominations or self-nominations for faculty members from research universities or liberal arts colleges, and from independent scholars for a Visiting Appointment for the 2013-2014 academic year. This visiting appointment was established to enable the Center to invite one scholar each year whose research and teaching explicitly examine issues of race in innovative interdisciplinary ways. Candidates in any field may apply. The Visitor may be appointed for one semester or for the entire academic year and will, with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty, teach one undergraduate lecture course, and will participate in faculty-graduate seminars and other activities of the Center for African American Studies. The Distinguished Visitor will receive a salary of up to one-half of his or her academic year salary (not to exceed a maximum salary set each fall) for the appointment period, which extends from September 1 to July 1; independent scholars with no sabbatical support will receive a salary not to exceed the maximum set each fall.

Postdoctoral Fellowships at The Center for African American Studies at Princeton University

The Center for African American Studies at Princeton University invites applications from pre-tenure scholars and recent Ph.D. graduates in all disciplines for two postdoctoral or more senior research positions. These positions will be awarded for the academic year 2013-2014 to emerging scholars who will devote their ten-month residency at Princeton to writing about race in the national or global contexts and, with the approval of the Dean of the Faculty, to teaching one semester-long undergraduate course.

Postdoctoral scholars will also participate with Center faculty members and affiliated graduate students in a seminar devoted to the discussion of work in progress. In addition, they will be invited to participate in other programs, including seminars, colloquia, and public lectures and will enjoy access to Firestone Library and to a wide range of activities throughout the University. Applicants should have received the doctorate within the past five years and cannot be in the process of writing a dissertation. The term for these positions extends from September 1, 2013 until July 1, 2014; a competitive salary will be provided.

CSU Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program

Through the Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP), the California State University (CSU) provides financial assistance in the form of a student loan to a limited number of individuals pursuing doctoral degrees. The program seeks to provide loans to doctoral students who are interested in applying and competing for CSU instructional faculty positions after completion of the doctoral degree.
  
Program Details
  • Loans available in amounts of up to $10,000 per year up to a total of $30,000.
  • Loans obtained through this program are repayable over a 15-year period, commencing one year after completion of or withdrawal from full time doctoral study.
  • If a participant applies, competes for, and is hired in a CSU instructional faculty position after completion of the doctoral degree, 20 percent of the loan will be forgiven for each year of full-time postdoctoral teaching employment in the CSU.
  • Part-time teaching in the CSU may also be considered for partial loan forgiveness, if the participant teaches at least half-time and has successfully completed the doctorate degree.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships

These fellowships, for 12 months of full-time dissertation research and writing, are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship might explore religious tolerance, human rights, spiritual beliefs in comparative perspective, justice, or racial and gender equity. The stipend is $25,000 for a 12-month period of full-time dissertation writing. The Newcombe Fellowships are administered with the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

International Dissertation Research Fellowship Program (IDRF)

The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) Program supports the next generation of scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences pursuing dissertation research that advances knowledge about non-US cultures and societies. The program is open to graduate students in those fields enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States, regardless of citizenship. The IDRF offers nine to twelve months of support; fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $20,000. Eighty fellowships are awarded annually.  The IDRF is committed to empirical and site-specific research that advances knowledge about non-U.S. cultures and societies (involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections, or quantitative data collection). The IDRF Program is administered by the Social Science Research Council in consultation with the American Council of Learned Societies and with funding provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The American Research Center in Egypt For Pre- and Postdoctoral Research in Egypt

The American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) is pleased to announce its annual fellowship program for pre- and postdoctoral scholars conducting research in Egypt. ARCE Fellowships are awarded for 3-12 months depending on the funding source.  Fellowships provide round-trip transportation, living allowance, mentoring and a home base in Egypt for doctoral candidates in the all-but-dissertation stage and senior scholars conducting more advanced research.  Post-docs are invited to indicate their interest in serving as the ARCE Scholar-in-Residence on the fellowship application.  The Scholar-in-Residence may serve for a period up to 12 months. 

FUNDING SOURCES

The U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA)
Fellowships are available to pre-doctoral candidates in the all-but-dissertation stage and to post-doctoral scholars. Fellowships are restricted to U.S. citizens and are for a minimum stay of three months and a maximum of one year.

National Endowment for the Humanities
The NEH makes available 1 fellowship for post-doctoral scholars and non-degree seeking professionals for a minimum stay of four months and a maximum of ten months.

The William P. McHugh Memorial Fund
The McHugh Award provides assistance to a graduate student to encourage the study of Egyptian geoarchaeology and prehistory (concurrent with an ECA fellowship for the study of Egyptian geo-archaeology or prehistory only).

The Theodore N. Romanoff Prize
This prize funds one $1000 scholarship to support the study of the language or the historical texts of ancient Egypt. Term: Concurrent with ECA or NEH award.

Center for the Right-Wing Studies Graduate and Undergraduate Mini-grant Program

Description: The Center for Right-Wing Studies invites UC Berkeley graduate and undergraduate students to apply for small grants to assist with the development of student research projects on issues related to right-wing movements in the U.S. and other regions of the world.

Established in February 2009, the mission of the Center is to encourage and nurture scholarship on right-wing movements in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and other regions of the world over the past hundred years.  The Center is especially interested in supporting research that examines the diversity of right-wing movements and their respective emphasis on social and religious issues, nationalism and race, and economic doctrines.  The Center promotes research, offers mini-grants, fellowships, and training opportunities to Berkeley students, publishes findings, and brings together leading scholars through conferences, colloquia, and other public events in order to engage in a comparative and interdisciplinary dialogue on right-wing ideology, politics, and organizational forms and their likely directions in the 21st century.

Eligibility: Full-time UC Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students who are conducting individual research projects on right-wing movements in the U.S. and/or other parts of the world are eligible to apply.  Proposals that support undergraduate thesis or graduate dissertation research are strongly encouraged.  Undergraduates may apply for grants up to $500Graduate students may apply for grants up to $1,000.

DAAD Fellowships for Graduate Study

Study Scholarships and Research Grants will be offered by the German Academic Exchange Service
(DAAD) for University of California, Berkeley undergraduate seniors, graduate students and post-doctoral
researchers to undertake up to 10 months of study and/or research in Germany during the 2013-2014 academic year.  Open to all fields.

Award: Monthly stipends range from approximately €750 - €1000. In addition, DAAD will cover health insurance and a flat rate subsidy for travel costs.

The Philip Brett LGBT Award

Description:  Philip Brett LGBT Fund to support Graduate Students working in LGBT Studies is an endowment established in 2009 by members and friends of the UC Berkeley campus community. The Philip Brett LGBT Studies Fellowship will provide an award to a UC Berkeley graduate student conducting research related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer studies in any field or discipline.

Applicants must provide brief summaries of their overall research interests and aims; questions they are pursuing or plan to pursue that are related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender issues; and contributions they hope to make to LGBT-related studies. Description: Awards scholar researcher doing new or on-going research (including dissertation research) in the labor and employment relations or related field. Only (Labor and Employment Relations Association) LERA members are eligible to submit a proposal for the Committee to consider.

Awards: The awardee or team will be recognized at the LERA Annual Meeting each year and will receive a check for $3,000 at that time for their project. They agree to provide a brief 1-2 page report of the project upon its completion for publication.
